Bobby Marks says that scenarios have been presented to the Knicks where Josh Hart and KAT (both CAA) accept contracts that keep the Knicks under the second apron in 2027-28. He says KAT’s comments Monday irked Dolan, which prompted today’s statement.

u/ReasonableChemical70 · 7hThis is the most likely explanation. Billionaire owner succeeds only because he stopped micromanaging and pinching pennies. The endorphin rush he got when they won overwhelmed the practical part of his brain, and now he’s back to his old meddling ways
C
u/cjackc11 · 1hTbf he didn’t start pinching pennies until directly after the championship like a fucking asshole

M
u/mattr1198 · 9hIt’s genuinely impressive how only James Dolan can take the easiest goodwill opportunity ever provided in his entire life, and through the course of 4 months erased any and all of it and then some. Somehow, he’s managed to make himself more hated than he’s was 5 years ago and AFTER his team won a championship. From creating a horrible fan experience for Gm 3 by inviting Trump to the Finals for no reason but ego, to the terrible political speech he gave at the victory parade and all this nonsense now, its wild how detestable the man still is after his own team accomplsihed what many saw as impossible.
J
u/Jussttjustin · 8hDolan genuinely thinks HE is the reason for the championship. Unbelievable ego.
K
u/kappachow · 7hI remember when his 15 minute "inspirational" speech to the team dropped during the playoffs, my first thought was, even if it was Brunson that leaked it, "okay, Dolan is now getting back to showing his face and making his opinions known, it only gets worse from here" and here we are. The best thing Dolan ever did was STFU
M
u/Mr-Dicklesworth · 6hHis speech was actually really solid ngl. Literally all he had to do was say something like “I knew we could do it. I love you New York this one’s for you” and do nothing else and he’d be respected. Instead he decided to ruin the finals experience for fans, act like a cheap fuck to the players, and promote a sex offender to a high ranking position.
M
u/Mr-Dicklesworth · 6hIt’s because rich dickheads like this are some of the most miserable people in the world. It’s like a game to them to just do as much asshole shit as possible and laugh while the peasants throw stones at them. It’s the same with Woody Johnson
N
u/nl2yoo · 1hUnder the apron through '27-'28, that's 2 years and 2 more bites at the apple. smh Ungrateful SOB, born on 3rd, wants to run back to 1st.
G
u/guanyu21 · 10hIt’s becoming more and more obvious that this 2nd apron stuff has been a Dolan directive……POS can’t get out of his own way
B
u/BAMBAMBAKLAVA11 · 10hI mean yeah he straight up said it lmfao How much would it exactly cost him I’m curious? And how much does he make from them winning the chip?
G
u/guanyu21 · 10hYou have people on this sub saying he’s just covering for the front office
H
u/HokageEzio · 9hFred Katz has said for months that they looked into this exact theory that Dolan is just playing the villain for the front office and that it isn't true. But some people don't want to believe reporters if the answer is something they don't like even if it's the ones who are the most tapped in.
G
u/guanyu21 · 9hBest comment I’ve seen all day
Z
u/zOmgFishes · 2hEspecially when i remember seeing reports that the FO thought they were going to dip into the second Apron for a bit after winning and was surprised by Dolan's comments.
M
u/mathis4losers · 8hMy theory is the opposite. The Front Office is telling the the players to make public scenes to embarrass Dolan and get him off his Second Apron stance
B
u/BAMBAMBAKLAVA11 · 9hCovering up what tho? We know the FO can build a championship team, it’s just a matter of having the money for it now. There’s no real discussion left to be had
G
u/guanyu21 · 9hPeople on this sub think Dolan is taking the heat for not going into the 2nd apron to allow the front office to save face. They think this probably because they have low critical thinking skills or are young fans who don’t understand Dolan is a toxic force
W
u/Wisdom_Pond · 9hIt’s not the $, it’s frozen 1R picks that can’t be traded and if stay over three out of five move to bottom of draft and many other restrictions on upgrading roster. Expect Dolan, other owners, players association try to change this.
F
u/FriendshipBest9151 · 7hThey can't really upgrade the roster without trading a starter tho. The team is seriously lacking tradable contracts.
D
u/det0724 · 5hOther orgs treat the second apron like a hard cap you can exceed once maybe twice in five years. So the idea that Rose would be wanting to stay out of it as long as possible is prudent but the way they are going about it is just reeking of Dolan meddling
J
u/johnny-Low-Five · 2hNot for nothing but KAT should have kept it in house. He ran to the media like a bitch and that probably pissed off most of the front office but Dolan, already the bad guy, agreed to play hard ball too. Dolan can be an absolute asshole and not be wrong for what he just did. I want KAT but he's playing the diva and using social media/sports media to plead his case.
I
u/IRodeTenSpeed88 · 8hIt would cost us ALOT. It fucks us from a team building perspective
M
u/mrsunshine1 · 10hIt’s not crazy to want to stay below the second apron
G
u/guanyu21 · 9hWhat 2nd apron penalty are you most worried about? Which ones for staying in it for a year and then which for staying in it over 2? Because we haven’t even been a 2nd apron team yet, so we have space before the actual penalties hit. So which ones are you worried about?
J
u/Jealous_Walrus6946 · 9hIf we sign KAT to the deal he wants, we will have to trade him and probably others in 1-2 years. The Celtics resigned everyone after their title and thats what happened. So what’s the point of locking towns up for five more years if it just means we have to trade him or OG for a crappy expiring contract in 1-2 years? They are doing the right thing by playing hardball here. We can’t keep this team together long term with that KAT extension. Especially since Brunson is the one they really owe the maximum amount of money to for taking that team friendly deal. They cant afford the Brunson Extension, this KAT extension, and still have a competitive team.
H
u/HipnotiK1 · 9hCeltics traded everyone because they weren't good enough anymore. If they kept winning they weren't making the same moves
J
u/Jealous_Walrus6946 · 9hYes, which is why it isn’t worth it to sign guys over 30 to huge maximum deals that go out to their age 36 season. players decline with age. contract values should reflect thats.
H
u/HipnotiK1 · 9hJrue was like 34 when the Celtics extended him. Not exactly the same as Kat who is still in his prime. Players get deals that result in the finals years not being great value all the time.
J
u/Jealous_Walrus6946 · 9hyeah I forgot how bad that JRrue deal was lmao.
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 6hTo be fair the Celtics traded away after Tatum had the injury in the playoffs. Do they do things differently if he didn’t get injured probably but I think there are more examples than the Celtics to use as a 2nd apron team like the Cavs and the Nuggets. I agree that if we sign KAT to a deal that he wants we are looking at a trade down the line which is reasonable. I think a lot of ppl not saying you in particular focus on keeping the starting 5 together when the core of this team is Brunson/KAT/OG. I think as long as we have those 3 we can still be competitive. If resigning KAT at a number he wants forces us to trade Bridges down the line I don’t think that means we still can’t be competitive. I think you have to expect some type of retooling anyway around your core players. To your point if the goal is to keep the starting 5 together then yeah I agree with you but if you look at who the core players of the team are what you think we need to be competitive long term I think it can change your outlook imo.
J
u/Jealous_Walrus6946 · 6hFair. but I also support trying to negotiate these deals rather than just bending over to the players. There’s still plenty of time to come to an agreement, which i think is the most likely outcome.
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 6hNo I 100% agree with you and don’t have an issue with the FO starting low where they did and how they approached it. KAT has already expressed he is willing to take a paycut and I think whatever number we land at we can make it work with a Brunson max and a OG extension. Unfortunately I think that will ultimately cost us guys like Bridges and maybe Hart in the future. I think Bridges and Hart are great players but they are supporting players. It is no different to me than the Nuggets trading MPJr and retooling around Jokic/Murrray/Gordon. Perfect world scenario you want to keep everybody especially after just winning but I think we have to acknowledge that to keep KAT we might have to sacrifice other guys which I think we should be willing to do imo
