u/E-Miles · 5hI feel like people would benefit from media analysis skills, because this is the most blind support of an owner I've seen on this subreddit. Highly recommend people learn lateral reading to make sense of the stories coming out about the team: https://guides.lib.uiowa.edu/c.php?g=849536&p=6077640 So often it's "Shams sucks" while disregarding the 3-4 other reporters form different companies independently reporting the same thing.
E
u/electrons-streaming · 6hThis is 110000% an Isaiah Thomas skull fuckery. Suddenly he is on the Knicks board and Leon is no longer running things and Dolan is back to destroying all that is holy with his touch. Our window of sunshine was a miracle, so let's just celebrate that it happened. More wildly irrational stuff is coming. 50% chance Leon Rose needs to spend more time with his family by February.
Y
u/YanksJetsKnicks · 8hDolan has the thinnest skin of any human on the planet. The fact that he put out a statement about not negotiating because KAT was a little unhappy with the extension talks just shows what a petty little baby he is.
L
u/Living_Internet_2970 · 8hAny chance all this contract stuff is being influenced by the great Isiah Thomas? He’s always had dolans ears
S
u/Shiccup1 · 9hWhy are we trying to low ball KAT just pay the man
J
u/joorral · 10hI think the Causality with all this would be Mikal You really can’t afford to let Kat leave or trade him. OG looks like he’s going to break out to an allstar Josh is literally the connector in the starting line up Mikal at his best is one of the best two-way players and is available every game. I’m not saying he is replaceable but if you plug in a Shamet/mcbride and either be a bit worse but have more money for another bench piece it might work. Does mo take a step? Again i don’t want Mikal traded at all. Just trying to be realistic if this team is to contend moving forward after this year. Sucks we are in this position but that’s the cba for ya
S
u/solo118 · 10hI think the Causality with all this would be Mikal fwiw and I hate to say it, if its Mikal we lose I would be OK. I really got to like him and understand his game, but I much prefer not losing KAT, Josh, or OG. Those picks were worth the chip, but I am going to pack his bags myself if I have to keep the "Big 3" of JB/KAT/OG together for years to come
N
u/nyg2013 · 6hI think I would keep Mikal over Hart, but we all are getting to the same place about the core 3 being Brunson, KAT, and OG whatever the outcome, we got an amazing championship out of the journey ha (meanwhile, the top players of all my other local teams have been getting injured as sacrifices in the last month)
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 5hNot Bridges at over 35M a year . The reality is you could turn Bridges into 2/3 role players. I like Bridges and appreciate what he has brought but realistically you could replace him with someone like Grimes at less than half than what Bridges is making at a similar skillet. I think the more ppl get more realistically about the team being built around KAT/Brunson/OG and not the starting 5 the more ppl will realize we can easily make the numbers work
N
u/nyg2013 · 5hwell, Hart is going to want more than $20-22MM annually...but if you are just saying we roll with those 3 and get the necessary supporting pieces around them, then that's fair
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 5hHart might want that but honestly I don’t think he gets that if he enters FA. He will be 31 when he starts his next contract and with his physical style of play and not necessarily being a great shooter I don’t think his game will age well and his decline would be the sharpest out of any starter. Also it doesn’t make sense for us to pay our 5th best player that considering what we are paying the rest of the starters. Ideally I want to keep everybody but im also realistic about what players I think are the core of this team.
O
u/Ok_Blacksmith_9916 · 10hCan some1 educate me on why Dolan doesn't want to go into the 2nd apron as of now? I thought this was the one time/best chance for a back to back title? Pre-off season, you have a roster that's title proven. Barring injury there's a very solid chance of a repeat if you keep said roster? Edit: Grammer
J
u/joorral · 10hLess about the money and more about flexibility You cannot aggregate salaries in a trade. Two or three guys cannot be packaged to match one incoming contract. Matching is capped at 100% of the salary you send out, plus $250,000. No 110% or 125% cushion. No mid-level exception, so you cannot sign a free agent in that range. No cash in trades, and no sign-and-trades. The first-round pick seven years out is frozen and cannot be traded. Stay over in multiple seasons (the rule is triggered across a multi-year window) and that pick drops to the end of the first round regardless of record. We have one big chance to win one more this year To the casual fans we should not care but to an organization you have to be very careful giving big contracts to guys already in their 30’s. Can they have the same sustain play when they are making max money at 34/35/36 years of age. I didn’t mind going into year 1 as a second apron team and would have resign Robinson but this is the reality for us.

u/Ok_Woodpecker1732 · 13hI’m watching the replay of the game from last night. Saw a bunch of people complaining about Dadiet missing three straight layups. Just watched that happen… good god. As my best friend likes to say in a game show announcer voice: “You’ve just earned yourself a one-way ticket to Europe!!!”
C
u/Crazylockdown · 11hReally puzzling draft pick, usually with projects like him there’s some sort of potential. Example: Frank was defense potential Dadiet has nothing that makes you say this guy can be a good shooter or defender or passer if he gets it together. Nor he’s athletic in NBA standards where he just has to develop his game in general to be a good player
W
u/wendiesel21 · 11hHe's six nine but plays like he's five nine
S
u/solo118 · 12hI guess he is just trying out for the trade partner we hopefully work with
S
u/SlyAbleman · 13hLast season started with lots of KAT drama and then….we won a title This season starting with a lot of KAT drama and then………
M
u/MrChangg · 14hSo whatever happened to KAT's whole spiel about "not caring about money anymore and just want comfort" ? Even IF he agrees to a very "low" 4/200m, he'll have made HALF A BILLION DOLLARS in his career. Unless he'd rather live out the remainder of his career in Charlotte because he decided to nickel and dime his "hometown" team where margins are already unbelievably thin. As a note, he's currently the highest paid player on the team and when the Captain's eye-watering extension kicks in, he'll only be the 2nd highest paid player on the team...
E
u/EasyBread42069 · 12hI agree with your point, but there's a lot of taxes in NY.
F
u/Foi_ · 12him very much willing to give kat his market value. i just dont think its at the super max, more like 55-60 million as the upper limit, not even considering the teams who may or may not have capspace and can even offer him that.
S
u/solo118 · 12hI think most if not all of us are in the same boat.... why FO is not doing it is beyond me. Max is 275 or whatever, we offered 200.... freakin meet in the middle and call it a day. Oh well guess we will revisit in June
F
u/Foi_ · 12hits also me overlooking the risk of paying him that much going to his mid 30s and not caring about the result of the upcoming season while also disregarding how it effects building the rest of the team. imo the 55-60 is the due respect and anything more is delusional from kat's agent.
B
u/ben_twiener · 15hWhy do people think a KAT deal isn’t getting done? The team has no incentive to extend him right now hence the unserious 200M offer. We have a glaring hole at backup center. Why would we allocate x amount of dollars to KAT when we don’t know how that situation will be addressed? We are not going to let the 3rd best big in the league, who was integral to a championship walk for nothing or trading him for scraps. KAT loves New York as well as his wife. He makes so much more money off the court as a Knick than he would anywhere else. Both parties want and can afford a reasonable deal. It will get done when the time is right. Sad to see that so many people in here still fall for “Knicks for clicks”.
G
u/Greglyo · 14h"We have a glaring hole at backup center." Andre Drummond had similar stats last season as Mitchell Robinson did so that's not true.
B
u/ben_twiener · 13hThere’s no way you believe this lol
G
u/Greglyo · 13hCheck it out https://preview.redd.it/394eyj2dhhuh1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e6210d337836b9605adcf3087355f21297af12a The only area not close at all was the field goal percentage but that's because Robinson only ever attacked the paint and never shot jumpers while Drummond does shoot jumpers.
B
u/ben_twiener · 12hDrummond is a great rebounder, but he is not as good as Mitch. Teams change their whole game plan to keep Mitch off the glass which opens up the floor for others. Drummond is also not a rim protector, a lob threat, and can’t guard on the perimeter. Those things made it much easier on our star players and will not show up on box score. There’s a reason Mitch got 47 M and Drummond the vet minimum. Mitch impacts the game in a lot of ways.
N
u/Neither-Operation · 13hStats don’t tell the whole story. Drummond can rebound but defense is gonna be a slight issue. He lost weight so hopefully he’s motivated and will put more effort on that end.
G
u/Greglyo · 13hSurely there's a chance that Mike Brown and the Knicks players like KAT and OG light a fire under his ass if he starts slacking defensively right?
B
u/bhris_cratt321 · 11hAndre doesn't have the physical tools to be an impact defender. He's slow, has no vertical, and has never shown any inkling of playing above average d at any point in his career. He could play with all the effort in the world and still be a minor liability.
G
u/Greglyo · 10hWhat about KAT though? He doesn't have a vertical either and is also seemingly slow and still has a positive impact defensively for the Knicks. Can Drummond be as good as Robinson defensively? Probably not but he can still improve from last season given the new team he's on.
N
u/Neither-Operation · 10hKAT isn’t slow at all for his size. He moves his feet pretty well at his size and has an agile frame.
K
u/KenBalbari · 14hAt the start of the 2028 season, KAT, Brunson, Bridges, and Hart will all be 32+ years old. It may not make sense for the Knicks to commit to that lineup for that year this far in advance. OG and Brunson have options for that year, but if they were to decline those, the Knicks would have only $58.8M in remaining salary commitments for that year, with $38.8 of that to Bridges, and the other ~$14M for Shamet, Alvarado, and Mo D. That puts them in a position to rebuild quickly if needed, so long as they haven't burdened themselves by then with any big contracts for aging former star players that would be hard to move. And I don't think there would really be much problem either with committing to that team for 2028, but no one here is asking for a 1 year or 2 year extension, either. I think if KAT would take 2/115M that would be done tomorrow. But obviously he'll want 4 years.
N
u/Neither-Operation · 10hBrunson will most likely be fine at 32. He spent 4 years in college and doesn’t have the mileage of a typical career star. He only has about 5 seasons of high level play. His style of play will age pretty well in my opinion.
B
u/ben_twiener · 13hKAT will maintain his trade value barring an Embiid injury trajectory. Floor spacing big man, elite rebounder, and average defender is an extremely rare and desirable archetype in this league. I think it’s easily a risk you take to keep the core in tact, coming off a dominant playoff run.
