[Edwards III] One wrinkle to watch that could impact a lot: KAT would have to decline his $61 million player option to be eligible to talk extension in season, and it’s clear he’s not happy with the situation.

u/JA_MD_311 · 16hThis all sucks but that's life in the second apron era. Nuggets got broken up, then the Celitcs, now it's the Knicks. Players agreed to this system and now they're (literally) paying for it. It promotes parity so there's reasons for it but it sucks with your team. KAT is definitely allowed to seek as much money as possible, there's just reasons for the Knicks to try and pay him as little as he will take.

u/mbn8807 · 12hI also don’t think people realize exactly how much luxury tax teams like the Golden State Warriors were paying during their Dynasty. If it was just financial you can justify it but the restrictions make it impossible to compete.
L
u/lemmem924 · 15hHe’s going to have to swallow the fact of getting his max money means he will most likely be in Memphis/Brooklyn or another bottom barrel team. Be interesting to see how pride factors into his decision.
B
u/beazypete · 12hTbh the biggest victims of the 2nd Apron has been the Wolves. The only reason KAT is even a Knicks is because of that. Maybe they don’t make the Gobert trade 2 years prior to the new CBA if this 2nd Apron tomfoolery wasn’t in the pipeline.
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 15hThe Nuggets still have their core together (Murray, Gordon, and Jokic) and Boston blew things up when Tatum got his injury. Both teams have dipped into the 2nd apron. The issue is being in the 2nd apron multiple years in a row.
T
u/Teamocil915 · 13hNuggets and OKC have both traded several key rotation guys to avoid the second apron Celtics just traded Jaylen brown, so it def wasn’t only about the Tatum injury. And aside from Boston I’m not sure there has been as expensive a starting five as this team. We can argue is it truly that detrimental to go into second apron with this team. But I don’t think it’s arguable that literally every other team in the league has done whatever they can to avoid it.
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 12hI don’t think you can apply the “every other team” logic because alot of teams are at different stages in their rebuild so I wouldn’t make that generalization as a team like the Wizards, Nets, Kings of course wouldn’t look to be near the 2nd apron. I’m more talking about teams like the Celtics , Nuggets, Cavs, etc. My point is not all teams who view themselves as contenders look to avoid is and there are teams every year ( typically contenders ) that go into the 2nd apron.
T
u/Teamocil915 · 8hAll the smart teams try like hell to avoid it We just like shitting on Dolan
J
u/JA_MD_311 · 14hKnicks will retain their core as well - JB, KAT, and OG - I would’ve gone into the second apron for Mitch for a couple years as well but I do understand not wanting to touch it.
T
u/Turbulent-Escape-470 · 13hCouldn’t go second apron for a guy who might play 21 games. Love him, but it’s simple math. Imagine how pissed you are if it’s an albatross contract vs if he is good on the Celtics.

u/AzraelAliNY · 15hI still don’t fucking understand how the Thunder kept their championship team & just swapped Dort for McCain. Also, forever fuck Presti for snooping Hartenstein from us
B
u/Big_Katsura · 14hThe Thunder have had to make a handful of salary shedding deals. And they didn’t snoop iHart from us, it was the CBA. We couldn’t match the fairly reasonable deal he got from OKC.
J
u/JA_MD_311 · 14hThe built up depth and the largest stockpile of picks in the league. They’re still facing second apron constraints as well and had to trade a lot of depth this offseason.

u/Radro2K · 10hKnicks don't win a title if they keep IHart as much as I liked him here, losing him was a blessing in disguise as it led to KAT and in turn the mountaintop
C
u/crototype · 17hI don't understand how this could be enforced. Is the NBA monitoring all conversations?
H
u/HokageEzio · 17hThey can't put pen to paper. If you're KAT would you trust them to verbally give you a number they agree to without signing anything? And until KAT is signed you can't sign Hart or Deuce.
C
u/crototype · 16hI see what you're saying. But boy would that be filthy work if they hammered out an extension that is contingent on his declining the option only to pull it the moment he declines the option. They'd have to know that pulling something like that would ultimately crater any trust between the players and the organization.
N
u/ny2k1 · 16hYeah, this isn’t happening lol
B
u/bkk_startups · 16hI can't imagine Leon Rose, who used to represent KAT and loves the guy, would screw him over like that. Then again, business is business and Dolan could be Dolan.
J
u/johnny-Low-Five · 10hI'm possibly very wrong but I swear I read that we don't want him to decline it, we want it to be part of his next deal because that basically allows his contract to get smaller as Brunson's gets bigger and it would basically flip flop but could still be the same % of the team's total salary. I wanna say 54 or 57% is considered a comfortable portion going to your top 2 guys. If I'm understanding it correctly if he declines it would make it so that he amd Brunson are ~66% of the salary once Brunson gets his deal and that is considered a bad move especially with Bridges having a contract and OG having an option in 28-29. The amount left to fill the roster just wasn't feasible. My biggest issue is that Brunson (Knicks legend and absolute boss) DIDN'T actually take a paycut, he took less money a year early which protected him from the risk of having a bad season or getting a serious injury. He got guaranteed money and the Knicks got potential savings (which in hindsight they did). Bridges is locked for 3 years and has a player option in 29-30. OG and Brunson have 2 years and player options and KAT has one year and a player option. Instead of 290 mil for 4 years Brunson could take an ACTUAL tiny 5 mil yearly cut IF KAT would accept 4-220, basically giving KAT the 5 Mil to keep the squad together. I don't think anyone is gonna offer KAT a max deal. I think 4-240/250 is the best he will get. So if he takes 4-220 and Brunson takes 4-270 they are both taking around a 5 mil discount to have our core of 4 together for at least 2 years, 3 if OG takes his option or 4 years if he gets a 2-4 year deal and Bridges took his option for year 4. If this can't happen then KAT or Bridges won't be on the playoff roster, Bridges has the better contract trade value wise but I'm unsure Kat is worth 4-270 or even 260 so I would look to trade him instead. Plus he is playing the social media/fans angle to pressure the Knicks while afaik he hasn't even said what he's looking for so the Knicks can counter/accept. He's just using the media to say they "aren't close" which, if he was serious about taking a discount, means he thinks someone will pay 4-277 at which point we could keep him and hope he doesn't get the deal he wants and has to take his option and then we either trade him or simply replace him the next season. So far I can only assume he thinks he's a max guy, he knows Brunson is the better/more valuable player so wanting the max means he's fine with the team being forced to trade bridges or have everyone else on the roster be "minimum salary" level players, not what a team player/winner wants. He also said he think he deserves some of this money because they won the finals. That's BS logic unless he's returned a portion of his salary when his team fell short.
C
u/charlesfluidsmith · 16hOf course you would. Leon Rose was literally his agent. NBA players don't go back on deals like that. Look at Gary Trent Jr
H
u/HokageEzio · 16hHarden and Morey verbally agreed to a deal that Morey later backed out on, and their relationship went back years.
G
u/GoldenBoyRecords · 15hI don't think there is any precedence to assume Leon would do that especially considering Leon Rose used to rep KAT. Morey has always been FO personnel. Leon Rose, I suspect understands the relationship side of things better having been an agent. Also doing things like that would hurt the image of the team and future free agent negotiations.
J
u/jabar18 · 17hThe Knicks are fucking themselves with the hold up.
P
u/Pablo_Undercover · 16hif you think this is the Knicks fucking themselves, you'd hate to see them having Kat on the books at 70 mil a year.
D
u/DifferentProcess6765 · 15hIt can't be, this post is nonsense. They talk and then if he is going to extend he declines and they do a new deal all at the same time.
H
u/HokageEzio · 15hThey literally cannot do the deal at the same time during the season. That's the point. They would have to wait until next offseason for him to accept or decline.
D
u/DifferentProcess6765 · 14hSo youre telling me if they want to talk during the season, they aren't going to because this rule is here? Nonsense
H
u/HokageEzio · 14hI'm sure they'll talk regardless of the rule, but they can't put pen to paper. So it's both sides taking each other for their word.

u/shitbageleven1213 · 13hI’m already tired of hearing about this. Call me when the deal is inevitably done… because it obviously will be and idc to hear about every conversation or disagreement they have until then. BTW: maybe I’m going crazy…. But during our playoff run… Wasn’t KAT talking all big how he’d love to take a big discount to keep the team together? I guess because we won he thinks he shouldn’t have to anymore ? Idk but I vividly remember him saying he’d take like 100 mill discount to keep the crew together. Because I remember thinking even at the time that was probably a stupid thing for him to say before negotiations even start.. even when if it was true
M
u/Muted_Pause_392 · 9hPretty sure you made that number up. He did go on a podcast where he said he would be willing to take a discount

u/Frost_1911 · 9hIf it's the clip I'm thinking of, I remember people posting it but iirc they confirmed it was back when the was on the twolves... Not that that part matters matters but different stages of life different situations. Idk I don't recall him stating that DURING the playoff run but I could be wrong.
P
u/Possible-Cake-5985 · 3hHe did say he’d take less money to try and keep the team together but I never heard him say a number. You actually think KAT is wrong in this situation? The dude helped us win a championship for the first time in 53 years, he said he’d take less money and they go and offer him $77 million less than what he’s eligible for, that’s ridiculous. He’s not happy and he shouldn’t be and now Dolan got made he made a few comments about not being happy and Dolan has a temp tantrum and decides he’s cutting off all talks. It’s utter ridiculous. They need to offer him a fair contract. The public pressure needs to be on the Knicks not KAT!!
